Professional athletes are worldwide heroes. Revered for their talents, discipline, and achievements – and envied for their wealth, wives and fame – it is a shared public tragedy when we lose one of them in their prime.
In honor of Kimbo Slice, Sean Rooks and the other athletes we’ve lost already in 2016, here is a tribute to 25 world class athletes we lost too young.
15. Kimbo Slice – 42 Years Old
Well-liked by all, and described surprisingly as a family guy, mixed martial arts champion Kimbo Slice (b. Kevin Ferguson) died suddenly on June 5th, 2016, still in the prime of his career. He had been admitted to the hospital complaining of abdominal pain, shortness of breath, and nausea. He was diagnosed with heart failure and placed on a donor list, but died before he could be transferred to the appropriate medical facility in Cleveland. He will be missed by his fans, by his wife, and by his 6 children – but his legacy of street-tough grit and and determination will always live on.
